Two-Day Expo for Students and Teachers

Teachers and their students, along with Waterbury area manufacturers benefitted from a two-day combination expo and seminar recently at Naugatuck Valley Community College. Called “Immerse Yourself in 21st Century Technology, the RCNGM sponsored the event to help motivate students toward manufacturing careers and to introduce them to the manufacturing technology programs at the college.

On the first day of the event, more than 250 students from six Waterbury-area schools were introduced to five tracks representing processes used in manufacturing, namely: CAD, CAM/CNC, rapid prototyping (laser printing), laser cutting, and laser scanning. The students were then given a tour of the college’s new technology hall, which included demonstrations by college instructors who introduced them to the kinds of programs offered. Students from the following schools attended: Emmett O’Brien Technical High School, Cheshire High School, Wilby High School, Kaynor Technical High School, Oxford High School, and Pomperaug High School.

In the evening, more than 70 Naugatuck Valley Community College students were treated to a seminar on rapid prototyping conducted by internationally renowned speaker, Terry Wohlers, who has authored nearly 350 books, articles and technical papers on engineering and manufacturing automation. In August, 2007, Wohlers was voted the #1 most influential person in rapid product development and rapid manufacturing by TCT Magazine (UK) in its TCT Top 25 Influential People survey.

Wohlers repeated his talk the following day for more than 85 teachers and manufacturers. The session was introduced by the president of the college, Dr. Daisy Cocco De Filippis, and The Honorable Selim Noujaim, State Representative (R-74). Following the talk and tour of the expo, participants heard from CBIA research economist Jason Giulietti on the state of manufacturing, nationally and in Connecticut.
