Task Abstract:

I want to introduce to my students what to expect when they go into a manufacturing environment. They need to be familiar with current practices in the work place and be ready for continous improvement. To do this I need to introduce Lean and the Kazien processes and then implement a lean manufacturing cell in our shop.

Task Objectives:

  1. Students will be familiar with Lean, Kazien, Value Stream cells and become more efficient in what we do, thus giving us more instructional time.

Esssential Understandings/Questions:

  1. n/a

Task Description:

Students will set up a Lean Manufacturing Cell in the school in Manufacturing Tehcnology, following an introduction to lean manufacturing process (Kaizen event)as part of my curriculum.   Students will reorganize the shop using the tools needed to perform the tasks in the area. (click here for Powerpoint presentation on lean manufacturing)

Resources Required:

I will need some tool boxes to organize tools for each area and additional standardized tooling for each machine area. I will need books on lean manufacturing and I am also missing some hardware needed to implement the Powerpoint presentation. I am also taking students to Kamatics on a field trip so they can see lean manufaturing first hand.

Prior Learning Required:

An introduction to Lean Manufacturing and Kazien.  The field trip to Kamatics will also be helpful.

Context within which work is produced:

Classroom and shop environment.

Individual or Group Work:

All group work, the Lean process and Kazien are dependant on team work.

Special Needs: none

Educator Comments:   I feel the Externship was very valuable, before this I had no idea what Lean Manufacturing entailed. I think that it is critical that our students need to be familiar with this concept before going into the work force. I also think that a shortened version of the externship would get more educators involved.
