Project:  Understanding Audio-Visual Equipment Engineering


Task Abstract: Using the task sheet provided by the instructor, inventory and explain the function of the Audio-Visual (AV) Equipment located in your classroom.

Using the task sheet provided by the instructor, research one career path in the Audio-Visual (AV) industry.

Grade Level: 10th - 12th grades


Task Objectives:

  • Students will locate and identify the Audio-Visual (AV) equipment located in their classroom. Creating an excel spread sheet, they will inventory the equipment by manufacturer, model number, location and brief description of operation/function.
  • At the conclusion of this assignment, the student will display an understanding of the job description and education and training requirements of his/her interested career path in the Audio-Visual (AV) industry.

Esssential Understandings/Questions:

  • Become more aware of the equipment available to them in the classroom.
  • Create a working list of the equipment.
  • Identify and classify the equipment, including a brief description of its operation and function.
  • It is important for the student to understand the roles of individuals within an organization because any given position directly or indirectly works with all of them.
  • No matter what the student’s career path may be, knowing the responsibilities of the people around them positions them for more success.

Task Description: The students will create an excel spread sheet based on the provided format then locate and inventory all Audio-Visual (AV) equipment in their classroom. Using internet resources, they will research the function of each item and write a brief description of its operation. Optional: If possible, have the students dismantle the Audio-Visual (AV) components as they conduct the inventory in preparation for assembly of Audio-Visual (AV) racks in a later assignment.

Identify a career path in the Audio-Visual (AV) field that interests you and research the education and skill levels you would need to obtain to enter that career path. Prepare a five (5) paragraph essay on your findings for presentation to the class. Include in your essay the job description, why it interests you, the education and skills you will need to obtain for the chosen job and how it relates to other positions in the industry.


Resources Required: Computer with internet access. Microsoft Excel.


Prior Learning Required: The student should have attended the Basic Equipment Found in the Audio-Visual (AV) Field Lecture prior to commencing this assignment. Previous instruction on the use of Excel helpful but can be included in the assignment.


Context within which work is produced: Work will be produced in a classroom/shop environment


Individual or Group Work: Group Work. Break the students up into groups of two to four.


Student Work Types: Reports and presentations, disassembling Audio-Visual (AV) equipment.


Special Needs: n/a


Educator Comments: Hand out the list of possible Audio-Visual (AV) items contained on the next page and review unknown items. If possible, allow the students to disassemble the Audio-Visual (AV) unit(s) for re-assembly in a later assignment. However, this should only be done if you have the appropriate drawings/schematics of your system to ensure proper re-assembly.

Career exploration: Moderate a classroom discussion during the presentation. During the observation, encourage a discussion of the aspects of the job that are appealing and unappealing.
