Externship Summary - 2006

RCNGM Leader: Jerry Bencivenga, Manufacturing Technology

East Haven High School

Externship: Wayne Garrick Architects

(Curriculum Project)

Lessons Learned:

It is useful to read about or watch a video about how buildings are designed and/or constructed, but that can never compare to experience of being there and being a part of it. Having been immersed in the day to day demands of the real world revealed to me just how important my job as a teacher is and what kind of responsibility I have to my students.

Working in an environment were the deadline may be so critical to the overall success of a project was the most challenging aspect of my experience. The design and production of accurate architectural documents must be done in a timely fashion in order for the construction phase to move forward.

Wayne Garrick Architects have been very helpful and supportive to my endeavor to educate my students about architecture and its' associated careers. Do to the software problem I did not request assistance the firm. I wanted to wait until we were fully functional with the proper software.

Impact on Student Learning

I believe that this work based curriculum opened their eyes to additional opportunities and expanded their horizons in terms of what they may pursue as a career. I also believe it expanded their skill and knowledge in this field.

One example of the impact is that many more students are registering for a full year course entitled Civil Engineering and Architecture being offered next year. This includes young female as well as young male students.

Externship Sustainability

I have not only discussed my experience both formally and informally with my peers but with my students as well. I have been encouraging my Math and Introduction to Engineering Design students to seek intern or even volunteer positions in any of the fields of their interest.

Currently I am enrolled at Norwalk Community College in an Architectural CAD program called Revit-3D. This is the program that I intend to use for next years’ course.

I am hoping that by my example that others will follow. My experience in this program has been invaluable. Thank you once again for the opportunity.
